Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2011: Goodbye Blue Lady and working in a box

In the week and a half since I last posted, quite a lot has happened, including my working days expanding to cover between 6 - 8 shows a day (performance and tech) - hence the lack of posts!

On Saturday 13th I did my last Blue Lady Sings Back show and said goodbye to the team at The Space on North Bridge. I've been very happy to have been part of this curious and original cabaret show, and really pleased for Tricity Vogue that she's getting four and five star reviews for her hard work. This show will also probably always have a place in my heart as the first show I sound designed for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival - hopefully many more to come!

On Monday 15th I started three days of 12-hour rehearsals for 3rd Ring Out, for which I will be working 6 shows a day as Company Stage Manager until the end of August 28th.

We're based on the Grassmarket, every day I have a lovely view of the castle framed against the grey clouds or blue sky depending on what mood Edinburgh weather is on any given day.

The show is technically quite demanding, with one container (the simulation cell) running a Mac Pro with Isadora (show control programme) linked via MIDI to a Mac Mini running Q Lab and three projectors for an hour-long show which runs 6 times with a 6 min turnaround between each. The other container (the strategy cell) is an installation open to the public, where the people of Edinburgh are invited to come and make suggestions about the future of the city.

My days have been swallowed with reboots, resets, patches, processes, ironing costumes and in wee moments of downtime, chatting about ribbon microphones with the lovely lads at Red Dog Music. I have a feeling I may be leaving with an SE Electronics RNR1 before the festival is out.

Given my ridiculously busy timetable (even the most experienced Edinburgh performers look at me with incredulity when I say I'm doing up to 8 shows a day) I haven't been to see as many shows as I would have liked, but I did catch The Jane Austen Argument's show The Spaces Between, and it was as lovely, raw and moving as I had hoped.

I also took time to celebrate teeny talented Amelie Soleil's birthday with a large contingent of the Edinburgh Fringe Cabaret Family, which involved midnight shows, drinks in the beautiful Voodoo Rooms while listening to White Mink, then 4am pizza.

Here's Amelie with her acro-monkey boyfriend and double act partner Edd Muir, with Bernadette Byrne from Eastend Cabaret in the background.

Maria Cork, one half of The Stillhouse Orchestra, Audacity Chutzpah and Mat Ricardo. Just acting normally.

I have six more days to go before I leave this beautiful city and the epic madness of this month. Let's hope my feet (never been so painful in my life) and sanity hold out until then.
